Mats Björk was born in the year 1975, in Huskvarna, Småland, Sweden. During the second half of the Nineties he and his brother Staffan started to make music, revolutionize, expand minds and create emotional storms together as Seamonster. After a journey that amongst other things gave birth to the full length albums »You May Unfasten Your Seatbelts« (Amphibient Broadcasting/Beauty Resources, 1999), »Tsunamin Audio Prism« (Amphibient Broadcasting, 2000) and »Eplektriknastr« (Amphibient Broadcasting, 2002) Seamonster� however reached the end of their road. But show me the unbridled creativity that can be held back…–
Ever since I became aware of Mats´ existence - ever since the Millennium was upon us and I got floored by »You May Unfasten Your Seatbelts« – I´ve been looking forward to new releases from him. And he has never, never, never let me down. Countless are the times I´ve become one with – gotten lost in, become hypnotized by – the bizarrely rhythmic and high voltage crackling soundscapes he has created in his solo project Kompjotr Eplektrika. When it was time to sum up the musical year of 2008 I put Majessic Dreams folk rock-y »Beautiful Days« (PonyRec) – a collaboration between spouses Mats and Jessica Breitholtz Björk – at the top of my Best Album of The Year list. For example. So I had no doubts as to whether I was going to love »Mats Björk som vågform« or not. The question was rather “How much am I going to love it?”. The answer turned out to be “indefinitely”.
Why Mats has chosen not to release »Mats Björk som vågform« under a pseudonym is absolutely crystal clear – its deeply personal/otherworldly expression is so special that it demands a true proper name as a sender. To listen to »Mats Björk som vågform« is to listen to Mats Björk... with everything that that entails.
The carpet stretched from one wall to another; green, hard, a bit sticky. The stereo was placed on a bench made out of coated aspen; matte black, silvery. When I was a toddler this was my entire world. Especially when James Hollingworth & Karin Ljungman´s LP »Barnlåtar« lay on the turntable. Then my young body was floating amongst its notes, melodies, flying dogs, elks, desert foxes and vitamins. Then I truly left time and space behind me. Over the years I´ve experienced this remarkable state of being on a number of occasions. My record collection is full of works that take me on trips to completely new places. However few have taken me as far as »Mats Björk som vågform«. Suddenly I remember how it felt like when I first fell in love with music.
Now it´s your turn. Now it´s your turn to experience »Mats Björk som vågform«. Perhaps you´ll let it guide you through a romantic crush? Perhaps you´ll let it lift you up from the bottom of heartache? Perhaps you´ll liken it to David Pajo´s »Pajo« (Drag City, 2005), especially since David ahead of that album forsake all of his Papa M/Aerial M/M alias? Perhaps you´ll let it inspire you to magnificent deeds of your own? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps... One thing is for sure, though: you´re going to love it.
